Cardiff- Language and Religion

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. The national symbol of this part of the United Kingdom is the red dragon on a white and green background.

Cardiff is not only the capital but also the economic and cultural center of Wales. Roughly two-thirds of the3-million population of the region lives in and around the city.

Welsh Language and Wenglish

The Cardiff dialect of the Wales language is spoken in the capital city. This language has been the main language in the region from the thirteenth century and much precedes English. It has been used as the official language of administration and worship in city for generations. In the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th the percentage of Welsh dropped considerably. In recent times there has been a revival in the practice of this old language. There is a Welsh school since the 1950s.

The Welsh language has had a big influence on the English spoken in these lands. It is referred to as Wenglish- a dialect significantly altered by the Welsh grammar with many words derived from Welsh.

Religion

The majority of the population of the city is Anglican Christian. The seat of the Archbishop of Wales is situated in the city. The city also has a Roman Catholic Cathedral, two synagogues, an Orthodox church and eleven mosques. As in most places around Western Europe the city has experienced a fall in people practicing any religion. According to a recent study around 20 percent of the people there consider themselves atheistic.

A very nice way to get around the city and experience the local landmarks and get confused with the signs written in Welsh is to hire a van or a car. Good offers can be found with Practical Car and Car Rental Cardiff and Day’s Rental.
